Thanksgiving Day is fast approaching. It's just around the corner.
So what are your thoughts when this Special Day comes? Of course we already knew the origin of Thanksgiving Day here in America. That the Pilgrims in America who came from Europe to escape religious persecution and poverty, declared a Thanksgiving Day in 1623 after their crops were saved by a providential shower. Since that time the Americans observed Thanksgiving Day every 4th Thursday of November.
There are two articles in my book about Thanksgiving Day- The origin of Thanksgiving Day and Why we celebrate it. We Fil-Americans have adapted the celebration of Thanksgiving Day. But what, really, are we thankful for? So many things come to mind. I am sure that those of us who survived the recent wildfires that occured here in Southern California are doubly thankful that in spite of the horrible thing that happened, we were saved. But this is not to say that we do not share the anguish, distress and extreme pain of those who lost their houses and other properties in that calamity.
We must be thankful to God for those firefighters, policemen and volunteers who put their lives on the line to help those unfortunate ones, the victims of the said adversity. We must also be grateful to Pres. George Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for setting a day from their busy schedule to see for themselves the devastation that the wildfires have caused. Their visit offered great comfort and consolation to those who suffered. Pres. Bush responded when state officials reached out to the Federal Government for help. Gov. Schwarzenegger requested more Federal help and within an hour, Pres. Bush approved an emergency declaration that authorized federal agencies across the government to help state and local responders, save lives, protect property and maintain public health and safety.
Thanksgiving thoughts are the kind of thoughts that we should have all year round, not only on Thanksgiving Day. It is the time to feel gratitude to God for all the good things in life. A simple prayer of thanksgiving is a moment-to-moment prayer, not reserved for a certain occasion or for blessings that we have already received. It can change our lives dramatically when we thank God even in the midst of our greatest challenge. With a prayer of thanksgiving, we open our minds to receive the great blessings that God has for us.
There are so many things to give thanks for, to be grateful for. Gratefulness is a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation.
Here's a simple poem I wrote a few years ago which I think is worth repeating on this occasion:
We Thank Thee, Lord
On bended knees, we thank Thee, Lord,
For all Thy blessings bestowed upon us,
The sun, the moon, the stars, the sky,
The air we breath, the water we drink,
The lakes, the rivers, the seas, teeming with fish,
And on the earth, the creeping things,
The verdant fields, "the amber waves of grain",
Thou created them all, for our satisfaction.
The flowers, the trees, the birds, the bees,
The dogs, the cats, the cattle, the sheep,
The horses, and all the animals in the forest.
Thou created all these, and gave Man dominion over all.
What more can we ask of Thee, Lord?
Thou gave us everything we need, to live a life that's most complete.
Thou gave us families and friends,
The wonders of the world within our grasp.
Thou gave us free will, the power to think and dream.
But above all these, Thou gave us Love,
The greatest gift of which we thank Thee most of all.
Our hearts are overwhelmed with joy and gladness,
For we are a part of Thee,
And thou are a part of us.
We thank, Thee, Lord!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY TO ALL!
