"And so this is Christmas"
Remember that song by John Lennon? Every time I hear it playing on the radio, I cannot help but heave a deep sigh, and wish John Lennon is still around. His songs tug at yout heart, giving such profound meanings. Like this one:
"So this is Christmas, and what have you done?"
"Another year over, and a new one began,
"And so this is Christmas, we hope you have fun,
"The near and dear ones, the old and the young.
"A very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year,
"Let's hope it's a good one, without any fear.
"And so Happy Christmas, for weak and for strong,
"The rich and the poor ones, the road is still long.
"And so Happy Christmas, for black and for white,
"For yellow and red ones, let's stop all the fight."
"A very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
"Let's hope it's a great one, without any tears."
Yes, "it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas." As usual people are busy shopping, at the malls, buying gifts for friends and loved ones, decorating their homes with Christmas lights, Christmas trees with shining ornaments and tinsels, Santa Claus and reindeers in their yards.
Year in and year out we do this. But what is Christmas really all about? it seems the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior has been relegated to the background while we do our shopping, decorating, merrymaking. Turn on the TV and on some channels all you could see are recipes for Christmas cakes, how to decorate the Christmas tree, where to place the wreaths, the mistletoe, what gifts to give to your loved ones. Christmas carols play on radios day and night. Seldom do we hear about Jesus Christ and HIs message.
Of course in all Christian churches, Christmas is celebrated with pastors, ministers and priests reminding us of the significance of this Holy Day. I wonder if we even think about what's going on around the world. I wonder where is that "peace on earth, goodwill towards men." After two thousand and seven years since Christ was born, people are still fighting.
Wouldn't it be a "Happy Christmas, for the weak and the strong, for the rich and the poor ones, for black and white, if we stop all the fight" as John Lennon conveyed in his song,"And so this is Christmas?"
Let us not forget the message of Christmas: Peace, Love, Hope, Joy. Christmas is not just for gift-giving, food on the table like ham, turkey and other delicious foods that we prepare for Christmas dinner. It's not about Santa Claus, about Christmas trees.
Now don't get me wrong.
Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ as God's gift for us. I know when Christmas is in the air, it gives us a feeling of great joy: when we see the "Little Lord Jesus lying in a manger" reminding us of the value of humility; when families and friends get together and affirm our love for one another; when we forget all animosities; when we ask forgiveness from those we have hurt and at the same time, we forgive those who have hurt us; when we watch our children excitedly open their gifts, so happy are they that we wish we could capture their joy in their innocence.
We need not aspire for expensive gifts especially during these hard times. And let us give gifts wholeheartedly without expecting any return. Let us give for the sheer joy of giving. Let us share what we can with our less fortunate fellowmen.
Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in distant lands who are still fighting right this very moment. May they realize that we are all children of one God and as Jesus Christ commanded, " Love one another as I have loved you."
"And so this is Christmas, what have you done? Let's stop all the fight"-John Lennon
"...although it's been said, many times, many ways,
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL!"
